It was one of the more exciting weeks in the Serie A, one that included some upsets and interesting matchups. Here’s a roundup of the weekend’s events.
Falcinelli Stuns Nerazzuri
With two early goals from Falcinelli, one coming from a penalty, unlikely victors Crotone jumped out to an early lead. Inter pulled one back with D’Ambrosio in the second half, but Crotone held on to their lead to grab them all three points. It was important for both sides; Crotone are now just three points behind Empoli, the spot to stay in the league, and Inter have fallen down to seventh behind rivals Milan, out of the Europa League.
Argentine Duo Power Juventus
Higuain’s brace with assists coming from Dybala and Lichsteiner respectively powered Juventus past Chievo. While El Pipita may not be enjoying the same level of success as last year at Napoli, he has certainly impressed for the Bianconeri, adding yet another threat to Juventus’ already dynamic attack. Juventus have a matchup with Barcelona to look forward to, and they’ll need to be on top form if they wish to win.
Roma Won’t Give up
Roma refuse to give up their chance at the title, keeping the deficit to six points. The goals came from Fazio, Salah, and Dzeko, and Bologna had no chance throughout the game. It was an impressive performance from Roma, but they can’t get too far ahead of themselves, Napoli lurking just four points behind.
Milan Finally Dominate
Milan finally produced some impressive football, the goals coming from Suso, Pasalic, Bacca, and Deulofeu. It was a clinical performance from the Rossoneri, both offensively and defensively, and they surpassed rivals Inter for the final European spot. They face their rivals in the Derby della Madonnina next week, and it should be exciting as always.
Sassuolo Hold on for Point
Sassuolo emerged with a point after an encounter with surprise European contender Atalanta. Pellegrini opened the scoring, and despite constant pressure from Atalanta, they were only able to equalize thanks to Cristante. The race for the final European spot is getting tighter and tighter.
Napoli Demolish Lazio
Lazio were no match for Napoli as a goal from Callejon and two from Insigne powered Napoli through a tough opponent. While Lazio outshot Napoli, they were unable to convert their chances into goals. The win means Napoli still remains four points behind Roma for direct qualification into the Champions League.
Il Gallo Still on Fire
A goal and assist from Belotti meant I Granata would get past Cagliari. Ljajic and Acquah provided the other goals for Torino while Borriello and Han scored for Cagliari. It was a milestone for Han, who became the first North Korean to score in the Serie A.
Fiorentina Earn Last-Gasp Point
As always, Fiorentina waited the last minute to get a point. Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for Sampdoria, and Gonzalo equalized in the 60th minute. Alvarez scored to push Sampdoria ahead, but Babacar equalized in the 89th minute to get Fiorentina a point.
Pescara Tie at Empoli
Zeman’s magic may have worn off, but Pescara were able to get a point against Empoli. El Kaddouri scored first for Empoli before Caprari equalised, ending the game’s scoring.
Genoa No Match for Udinese
Udinese demolished inconsistent Genoa, goals coming from De Paul and Zapata. The Argentinian scored a brace while Zapata only scored one, but they were able to keep a clean sheet and claim all three points at home.
