Zapata rescued Milan, Higuain shined again, and Roma finally slipped up in an exciting week of Italian football. Here’s the rundown on the week’s events.
Zapata Heroic
It was another thrilling derby with the same scoreline but a different turn of events. Hosts, Inter, got off to a quick start thanks to goals from Candreva and Icardi. It looked done and dusted, but Milan were unwilling to give up. Romagnoli pulled one back in the 83rd minute with a great volley, and the hero of the match, Zapata, scored an acrobatic goal on the last kick of the game. It was a thrilling sight, and it shows hope for the future.
Dzeko Not Enough
Roma finally slipped up against Atalanta. Kurtic opened up the scoring first, and Dzeko equalized early in the second half, but the Giallorossi were unable to take home all three points. The draw could be costly for Roma, who now sit just two points behind Napoli, a team that has been on fire as of late.
Pescara? No Problem
Juventus had no troubles in dispatching Pescara thanks to a brace from Argentinian, Gonzalo Higuain. Juventus have all but sealed the title, and barring another miracle from Barcelona, they should be through to the semifinals of the Champions League.
Injury Time Saves Lazio
Lazio emerged with a point at Genoa thanks to two goals in injury time. Simeone opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Biglia tapped in a fortuitous rebound in the (45+2) minute. Pandev put Genoa ahead once again, but Luis Alberto equalized in the 91st minute. It was a tight affair, and Lazio were lucky to escape with a point.
Empoli Stun Fiorentina
El Kaddouri opened the scoring for Empoli before Tello equalized for the Viola. It wasn’t over, and in what seems to be a pattern this week in the Serie A, Pasqual scored in the 93rd minute to grab all three points for Empoli. Things got even worse when star player Nikola Kalinic got himself sent off in the 95th minute. It was a poor performance from Fiorentina, and they need to be better if they wish to compete in Europe.
Udinese No Match for Napoli
Napoli demolished Udinese thanks to goals from Mertens, Allan, and Callejon respectively. Napoli have the chance to surpass Roma for that second place spot, and if they continue to play this well, Roma will have to watch out.
Il Gallo Continues Scoring
Belotti converted a penalty and Nwankwo equalized for Crotone in Torino’s 1-1 draw with Crotone. Torino have been great offensively, but their defense is lacklustre to say the least, and they need some improvements over the summer transfer window.
Cagliari Demolish Chievo
Chievo were left no hope as Cagliari routed them 4-0. The goals came from Borriello, Sau, and Joao Pedro. Cagliari haven’t had the greatest season, but they have avoided relegation, and they’ll look to improve next year.
Sassuolo Defeat Sampdoria
Schick scored first for Sampdoria, but they were unable to hold their lead. Two quick goals from Sassuolo early in the second half from Ragusa and Acerbi got them the win.
Palermo Can’t Convert Chances
Palermo dominated the match, especially after Pulgar was sent off in the 24th minute, but they were unable to convert and emerged with the one point.
