Sampdoria broke a five-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over Bologna in the Serie A on Sunday.
Sampdoria had slipped to 14th on the table heading into their clash at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, but put the result beyond doubt inside 15 minutes with goals to Angelo Palombo, Daniele Gastaldello and Massimo Maccarone stunning the visitors.
Daniele Paponi pulled a goal back for Bologna in the second half, but it was mere consolation as Sampdoria moved to 12th in the league standings following the victory.
Fiorentina shocked Palermo 4-2 away from home to deny Delio Rossi’s side a spot in the league’s top four.
The hosts at Stadio Renzo Barbera went ahead in the seventh minute via Javier Pastore, before Fiorentina’s Alberto Gilardino made it 1-1 prior to half-time.
Antonio Nocerino restored Palermo’s lead three minutes after the break, but a late onslaught saw Fiorentina overrun the home side with Michele Camporese and Riccardo Montolivo strikes coming either side of a Cesare Bovo own-goal.
Elsewhere, Lazio recorded a 2-0 away win over relegation-threatened Brescia, while Cagliari’s Nene scored a brace in his side’s 4-1 triumph at home over Chievo.
Bottom side Bari stopped a run of six straight league losses when they held Genoa to a 0-0 draw, and Catania’s Francesco Lodi scored a late double to help his side overcome Lecce 3-2.
Udinese moved into fifth with a 3-0 thrashing of Cesena that came courtesy of two goals and an assist to Antonio Di Natale.
