Opportunities to close the gap on Barcelona don’t come along all too often in La Liga, and Real Madrid will be fully aware of that. Alas, one of those chances was gifted to them on a silver platter earlier today when Leganes defeated Barca to open the door for a Real victory – but it didn’t quite work out that way. The European champions dropped the ball in a big way with an emphatic 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sevilla, who can’t seem to stop scoring as of late as their domestic resurgence continues.
Warning signs
There have already been whispers throughout the course of the season that Real haven’t quite looked themselves as of late, despite still going unbeaten in the league prior to this game.
It was almost as if an implosion was waiting to happen, and we saw it play out before our very eyes tonight. The warning signs were there from even before kick off with Sevilla scoring 11 goals in two games prior to this encounter, and with just quarter of an hour gone, they made Madrid pay for taking them too lightly.
Desperate times
Andre Silva scored twice in a five minute spell that really stunned the visitors, who faced an uphill battle if they wanted to make Barca pay for their earlier loss. Unfortunately, they still weren’t really able to get going even after that wake up call, with Ben Yedder proving why he’s such a hot commodity with a nice finish six minutes before half time.
Both of these clubs are going to be thinking about this result long into the night, with the ramifications being clear for everyone to see upon a quick glance at the La Liga table. Sevilla have moved up to 4th and within three points of both Real and Barca, with Alaves having the chance to go joint 1st with them tomorrow night. Real will attempt to regroup in time for their mammoth derby clash with Atletico at the weekend, whereas travel to Eibar for an evening kickoff.
