In what was a real showdown at the top of the Premier Division table, Shamrock claimed what could turn out to be a season-deciding 1-0 victory against Derry City on Monday night.
In what was a largely cagey affair from the Tallaght Stadium, it was Rory Gaffney’s first-half strike that proved enough for Stephen Bradley’s side to extend their buffer at the top of the Premier Division table to seven points.
Making an immediate return to winning ways after dropping a pair of points away at Bohemians over the weekend, Shamrock will now know that they are sat in pole position to defend their domestic crown in 2023.
While Derry might have travelled to Dublin after claiming a much-needed boost against Cork City a few days ago, the Candystripes certainly came crashing back down to earth and still find themselves in the midst of a recent wobble.
In a showdown that could decide where this season’s Premier Division title will be heading, we have taken a look at the main talking points from Monday’s battle in Dublin.
It will take a miracle to stop Shamrock
While Shamrock might have endured a nine-year Premier Division drought between 2011-2020, the Irish heavyweights have only continued on a remarkable top-flight romp over the past three years.
Although Monday’s hosts might have been disappointed after suffering a second-half collapse away at Bohemians over the weekend, Bradley’s side have certainly proven that was nothing more than a minor blip.
Putting in a rigged display here and more than deserving of maximum points, Shamrock have mustered 12 points from just their last five Premier Division appearances and they have bounced back from their brief wobble when signing off May.
With Monday’s 1-0 victory now widening their buffer over the chasing pack to seven points, it appears that Bradley’s squad are sat firmly in pole position to claim four top-flight crowns on the bounce.
Continuing to shine on either side of June’s international break and not suffering a single defeat on home soil since the start of April, Shamrock have proven that it will take a minor miracle to stop them this season.
Gaffney back to his best
Gaining a reputation for their success in the final third this season, it will certainly be Gaffney who is spearheading Shamrock’s charge for a fourth consecutive Premier Division crown this season.
While the one-time Salford striker might have drawn a blank on either side of the international break, the 33-year-old has enjoyed an eye-catching flurry over the past month.
Along with bagging a brace in Shamrock’s routine 3-0 romp away at Sligo Rovers on June 5th, Gaffney has now notched seven top-flight strikes this season and has a crucial role to play going forward.
Now sat in pole position to claim Shamrock’s Golden Boot this season, Gaffney was certainly back to his best on Monday night.
Causing Derry’s leaky defence a string of issues here, this was also the first strike that Gaffney has recorded in Dublin since the start of May.
Derry come crashing back down to earth
While Derry might have once again gained a string of plaudits since opening the 2023 campaign, the Candystripes do find themselves in the midst of what has been an extended rut.
Although Monday’s guests might have marked their return from the international break with a much-needed 2-0 victory at home against Cork City, Ruaidhri Higgins’ men have failed to find any kind of stability over the past month.
On a rut that is highlighted by a woeful 4-1 drumming at the hands of St. Patrick’s when opening June, Derry have now picked up just a single win from any of their last six straight domestic appearances – a run that stems all the way back to May 19th.
Now knowing that it will take a minor miracle to dethrone Shamrock this season and accepting that another silver medal finish is the best they can settle for, Higgins’ men have also shown some rather glaring issues on the road.
In fact, Derry have now lost each of their previous three top-flight away battles by an aggregate score of 6-1.
