As reported by several sources, Xherdan Shaqiri is close to leaving Olympique Lyon to join MLS side Chicago Fire. In fact, Lyon themselves have acknowledged that the Swiss international has been left out of the squad to travel to Monaco on Saturday, due to being given permission to talk to an MLS club.
“The management of Olympique Lyonnais and Peter Bosz announce that they have granted Xherdan Shaqiri’s request to be able to start discussions with an MLS club as part of a future transfer,” the statement reads.
“As a result, the Swiss international midfielder did not take part in today’s training session and will not be part of the squad that will travel to Monaco tomorrow evening as part of the 23rd round of Ligue 1.”

Having acted as a very efficient midfield/attacking backup option at Liverpool for three years, during which he helped the team win the Champions League and the Premier League, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, Shaqiri joined Lyon last summer for a reported fee of €6 million. Since then, he’s gone on to make a total of 16 appearances in all competitions, more than half as a starter, scoring twice and producing three assists.
