Luke Shaw’s current contract with Manchester United was due originally to expire this summer, but the club triggered the option to extend it by 12 further months, to safeguard against the prospect of losing the left-back for nothing while they work on finding common ground on a new deal.
That, according to Sky Sports‘ Melissa Reddy, has now been done, and a similar resolution is expected to happen with goalkeeper David De Gea, who recently said he loved everything at the club.
United signed Shaw as a teenager back in 2014 from Southampton, and since then, he’s made a total of 248 appearances for the club in all competitions. The 27-year-old, who can also do a decent job as a centre-back, has been particularly important for United’s resurrection under Erik ten Hag this season, starting 21 of the 27 Premier League matches his team has played so far in 2022/23.
Despite having a very good alternative for the left defensive flank in the form of Tyrell Malacia, Ten Hag will certainly feel good about the England international staying put for the foreseeable future.
