Following the departure of Jens Lehmann, Arsene Wenger will understandably look to strengthen his goalkeeping department. The German number one was replaced as first choice at Arsenal at the beginning of last season by Manuel Almunia. Now, after a very frustrating season which was spent mostly on the bench, Lehmann has joined Sttutgart.
Wenger will look to add depth and experience to his goalkeeping department and he has identified Newcatsle’s Shay Given as the perfect addition to his squad. The Irish goalkeeper has been superb in his 11 years at St. James’ Park and now he has been given the opportunity to join a title challenger. The Chronicle reports that sources at both clubs, Arsenal and Newcastle, have confirmed the Gunners interest.
To replace their Irish goalkeeper, Newcastle United will move for current Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor. According to the Glasgow Evening Times, McGregor would cost Newcastle £6 million, if they could get him. The 26 year old is also being chased by Tottenham – who beat Newcastle to the signatures of Luka Modric and Johnathan Woodgate already this year – according to the same newspaper.
