On a rare Thursday night of Premier League action, Manchester United were able to ride out a wave of adversity to defeat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. The Blades took the lead early only for the Red Devils to take over, eventually seeing out a 3-2 win that keeps them well and truly in the top four hunt.
United’s away determination
It’s flying under the radar a bit, but Manchester United continue to show some real grit and determination away from home. It’s almost as if they thrive off of not having the pressure of Old Trafford on their shoulders, and even when they go behind, they’re confident in their ability to battle back and win the game. That is a trait which simply cannot be undervalued and as we look ahead to the rest of the season, it could prove to be their biggest asset.
The Blades’ uphill climb
With one point from 13 games, this is officially the worst start to a top flight season in the history of English football. Sheffield United fans will know that and so will Chris Wilder, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they are in serious trouble. All they need is a stroke of luck and that could be enough to get them up and running but within such a competitive environment, and with second season syndrome hanging over their heads, it’ll be interesting to see how they respond to this latest loss.
Momentum building for Ole?
Right now Manchester United are priced at 19/20 with 888sport to finish in the top four this season – which makes them the fifth favourites to do so. They could maybe even aim higher than that if they really get into the kind of rhythm fans expect, but for now, that’s a good measuring point for them. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows how many ups and downs he’s had with the club as manager and while it isn’t all going to be smooth sailing from this point on, they’re managing to put points on the board, and they need that kind of consistency.
