Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan abandoned due to heavy rain

Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic will have to replay their Championship fixture after Wednesday’s match was abandoned due to rain.

Heavy and persistent rainfall at Hillsborough saw proceedings brought to a halt after an hour as referee Kevin Stroud called the players off with Wigan 1-0 ahead.

Stroud had spoken to both managers before making his decision, and with standing water across the pitch it was deemed unplayable.

Wigan had taken the lead in the 24th minute when James McClean took advantage of a poor clearance from Roger Johnson to fire beyond Damian Martinez.

Johnson nearly made up for his mistake on the brink of half-time but Scott Carson produced an impressive save to deny the defender’s header.

A rearranged date for the fixture has yet to be announced.
