Catalan sports daily El Mundo Deportivo has reported that FC Barcelona are looking into the prospect of signing 31 year old Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko on loan.
With Samuel Eto’o likely to leave Camp Nou in the summer transfer window, the door is open for a new striker at Barcelona. Coupled with the chase for Emmanuel Adebayor so far proving fruitless, the name of Shevchenko has been brought up as a potential replacement.
El Mundo Deportivo claims that Ukrainian agent Dimitri Sellyuk is set to act as facilitator – he is close to Shevchenko and Chelsea, but also has a Barcelona connection due to his acting on behalf of Yaya Touré. An outright transfer may be highly unlikely due to Chelsea’s insistence on a massive transfer fee, but a loan deal could work out well for all concerned. New coach Luiz Scolari is said to be unconvinced by ‘Sheva’, while conversely the Barcelona sporting directorship are captivated with his abilities.
The Ukrainian, was once the undisputed king of all European strikers during his days with AC Milan, but has failed to live up to the billing at Stamford Bridge. A move to the Catalan giants may be just what he needs to rejuvenate his career.
