England claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over World Champions Spain yesterday.
It was a victory which was achieved by Capello’s defensive tactics.
Fabio Capello achieved results as a club boss by using defensive tactics in the past and they worked a treat against Vicente Del Bosque’s men.
Change
Apart from the noticeable change in the tactics Capello had brought some younger players into the squad for the Spain game. The likes of Danny Welbeck and Jack Rodwell were both brought of the bench and impressed against the World Champions.
Established
It has taken Fabio Capello a long time to give younger players their chance in the full international team. Capello took over and has stuck with the established order through thick and thicker. Now with his reign coming to an end Capello is finally taking what he considers a risk.
Stale
The last year or so we have seen a slow changing of the team as Capello has tried to get rid of a stale squad of players. Capello has struggled with the idea of bringing new players into his squad but hopefully his latest squad is a sign of things to come.
Promising
Maybe it was a lack of knowledge on the Italians part that he took so long to bring younger players into his squad. However his right-hand man Stuart Pearce is the manager of England’s under-21 squad, so Capello should use his knowledge to gain more knowledge of the younger available to him.
There is four games to go before the European Championships and Capello needs to use these games to give the likes of Welbeck, Sturridge and Rodwell a chance to impress. These young players are the future of the England team.
This is not getting carried away by England’s victory over Spain. This is the fact that the likes of Sturridge, Welbeck and Rodwell are playing regular first team football for Premier League clubs. And they are also in good form at their clubs.
Improvement
England do have a good young group of players that in my opinion have more promise than our so called golden generation. These youngsters are good enough to get into top teams in arguably the best league in the world.
What is good about these young players is that they do not look fazed on the international stage. Manchester United youngster Phil Jones made his full debut in a heated international game in Montenegro, he didn’t look out of place.
Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell didn’t look out of place on his debut against Spain at Wembley. Rodwell has started to fulfil his immense potential on Merseyside and has been an almost ever-present for England’s under-21’s in the past 12 months.
Failure
England boss Fabio Capello hasn’t got much to lose by giving those youngsters a chance in the full international England team. England fans expectations have been diluted by some poor performances in recent months and years.
England fans are realistic enough to know that England are not really as good as the likes of Spain, Germany or Holland, despite yesterdays 1-0 victory over Spain. And a number of the current England squad have been part of big disappointments at major tournaments in recent years.
That must have had a psychological effect on those players and maybe players without the experience of failure would enjoy the experience more than those accustomed to failure. And England fans expectation levels would be lower with younger players in the team, so there would be less pressure on them win the trophy.
Future
Capello may not care about the future of the England national side with him leaving his job after Euro 2012. However selecting the younger players will aide them in their development and hopefully be good preparation for the World Cup in 2014.
Phil Jones, Jack Rodwell, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck are all players that would benefit from the experience of an international tournament. I for one wouldn’t mind Capello using Euro 2012 as preparation for the World Cup.
Germany attempted a similar thing at last years World Cup and now we are talking about Germany as one of the top young teams in the world. England may not have the same amount of talent coming through but we definitely have a good young group coming through.
Capello has been criticised for sticking with the same players, so I don’t believe that many England fans would complain if the Italian decided to take those promising youngsters to Euro 2012. Unfortunately I think the Italian will probably decide to air on the side of caution and leave most of the youngsters at home.
Which youngsters should be included in the England Euro 2012 squad?
