Since the return of Kenny Dalglish as manager Liverpool’s fortunes have taken a massive upturn.
They may have suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sporting Braga in the Europa League earlier this evening but the seeds of recover have already been planted by the Scot.
Legend
Kenny Dalglish is a Liverpool legend both as a player and manager. He inspired the club to major success in the seventies and eighties.
He is affectionately known as King Kenny at Anfield and will always inspire good memories in Liverpool fans old enough to remember him as a player.
Inspiration
Under former-boss Roy Hodgson the club lacked any sort of inspiration. They were like a ship without a captain. The return of Dalglish has proved an inspiration to all at the club. The fans, the players and everybody behind the scenes all now seem to be pulling in the same direction.
It’s a completely different situation to the one in which Hodgson found himself. Hodgson is a decent manager but he was well out of his depth at Liverpool. He didn’t inspire confidence in his players and the result was the club suffering a horrendous start to their Premier League campaign.
Dalglish has overseen a near complete turnaround and last Saturday’s 3-1 victory over bitter-rivals and league leaders Manchester United proved what Liverpool can do when they are on song. I doubt the Reds could have won that game under Hodgson.
Support
Not surprisingly Kenny Dalglish has received major backing from Liverpool heroes of the past. The likes of Roy Evans, Alan Kennedy and Phil Thompson have all voiced their support for the Scot to take over on a full-time basis.
Those are three people who have spent a lot of their footballing lives at Liverpool and their opinions should be valued. They are not the only ones who are in support of the Scot continuing in the post beyond the summer the majority of fans want the 60 year-old to stay on as boss.
Continuity
Liverpool are in a period of transition and it’s important that the club retain some continuity. Keeping Dalglish would help with that continuity. He has managed to bring stability back to the club and helped the Reds push up the Premier League table.
Deserved
I have to admit I thought that bringing back Kenny Dalglish was a mistake. I saw it as a step backwards. The Scot had been out of football management for a longtime and I thought he might be slightly out of touch with Premier League football.
In his time in charge he has totally changed my point of view. He has made Liverpool a solid outfit that will be in far better shape next season because of his work with the team. Dalglish loves the club and has said there will be no hard feelings if he is replaced in the summer.
I now think it would be a mistake to replace the Scot. His return to Liverpool seems to have given him a new lease of life. Football and Liverpool are in his blood and if he stays as manager I’m sure he will help Liverpool become successful again.
If he doesn’t then he has laid the foundations for the next manager, whoever they may be. And if he doesn’t stay on as manager I’m sure he will still love the club and go back to his role nurturing the future generation of Liverpool player at the clubs academy.
Will Kenny Dalglish be appointed permanent Liverpool manager this summer?
