Despite being 37 years of age, Cristiano Ronaldo is still the most talked-about name in world football. Sure, you could make an argument for Lionel Messi, but then we’d be going in relentless circles and what on earth is the fun in that?
There’s been a great deal of speculation as of late regarding the future of the Portuguese veteran with reports indicating that he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer. So, with that in mind, we thought it’d be interesting to run through a few of the pros and cons behind the possibility of it actually happening.
The pros
Cristiano Ronaldo is 37 years old and even though there are benefits to his game, you could argue that he isn’t going to be of much consistent use for too much longer. Sure, he may go on to play until he’s 40 and beyond, but the injuries are beginning to add up and there aren’t too many ways in which you can keep avoiding that.
Plus, the entire first team focuses on his style and the way he dictates the pace of the game. That would be fine if he was still getting stuck in and able to have his usual energy output, but that’s no longer the case. If they got rid of Ronaldo, it could open up the door for an influx of young, hungry stars who are ready to take the spotlight.
The cons
From a marketing perspective it obviously doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for Manchester United to wave goodbye to such a cash cow like Ronaldo. He’s the kind of figurehead that can motivate an entire fanbase regardless of whether or not he’s in his prime anymore, and that’s the kind of energy the club sorely needs to keep hold of.
Plus, if we go off of numbers alone, the man scored 24 goals in 38 appearances last season including 18 in the Premier League. That’s the kind of total that can’t go unnoticed because without him firing in those goals, United’s end to the campaign could’ve been a whole lot more embarrassing than it actually was.
