Simeone excited at returning ´home´

A win over Lazio will provoke mixed feelings for Catania coach Diego Simeone, who enjoyed success with the Romans during his playing days.

Simeone was a member of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Scudetto-winning side in 2000, and said he still had much affection for his former club.

“I’ve had an unforgettable experience in Rome,” Simeone said.

“I came from Inter and we won a Scudetto immediately. The fans have always opened their doors to me. I was part of a wonderful group of players who were coming off a difficult season.”

“I will never forget that period as a man and as a player. It’s easy to imagine the emotions that I will feel on Sunday, but I am not thinking about it.”

The former Argentinian international said he would put his emotions aside during the game as his side look to avoid the drop into Serie B.

“I am concentrating on Catania’s survival and won’t allow myself to become distracted or feel sentimental.”

“I am concentrating exclusively on the present. We have a couple of objectives in play.”

Meanwhile, Lazio could be without striker Mauro Zarate for the clash and possibly the remainder of the season after the Argentinian arrived an hour late to training.

Lazio boss Edy Reja said Zarate’s actions were unacceptable but he was not sure how the club would punish the player.

“He forgot the time of the training session, so this morning he turned up at 12 instead of 11 and did not train,” Reja said.

“The schedule is pinned up outside the locker room for all to see, but I haven’t decided how I’ll deal with him.”

“Whoever steps on to the pitch will give 100 per cent. I want to see character and temperament.”

Lazio will be without the suspended Francelino Matuzalem while Stefan Radu is a doubt for the clash due to personal reasons.
