Manchester United’s 23-year-old Mexican sensation Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez could miss a couple of weeks following an injury picked up after he was taken out by Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole. Cole’s lunging tackle got nowhere near the ball, as he went in studs showing on Hernandez’s leg. The good news for United is that the Mexican international hasn’t broken his leg.
The reigning Premier League champions have run into some back luck this season when it comes to injuries. Centre-back Rio Ferdinand and his partner in crime, captain Nemanja Vidic, are just two of United’s first-team players out due to injury. Rafael, Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, and now Chicharito are also sidelined for the Red Devils.
Regarding the tackle that injured Javier Hernandez, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said:
“To me, it was a shocking tackle. An absolutely shocking tackle.
“The referee’s booked him and, if he’s booked him, I don’t know why it wasn’t a penalty.
“I must ask him [Dowd]. We don’t know how Hernandez will be. We’re going to have to wait until the morning but, at the moment, his leg is very numb. He’s hardly got any feeling in it so he could be out for a couple of weeks.”
Fergie also added that Chris Smalling suffered a groin injury during the match against Chelsea on Sunday. That being said, if any club in Europe can quell with this many injuries, it is surely Manchester United. The fact that the Red Devils are sitting atop the English Premier League table without the likes of Ferdinand and Vidic is a tribute to the depth and talent of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad.
With injuries come opportunities for some players. The knock to Javier Hernandez means that Dimitar Berbatov will likely be United’s top striking option, at least for a few weeks. Aside from Berba, United also have Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf as viable options. Berbatov looks to be the man for the job tomorrow against Leeds United.
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Paul Pogba will make his Manchester United debut (senior team) on Tuesday United’s Carling Cup clash with Leeds United: “He’s got a slight injury. It’s not too bad, though. So he wasn’t available for Sunday but he should be able to play on Tuesday and I intend to play him against Leeds
United.”
Fergie has ruled out sending Pogba on loan this season, which means he will likely get more playing time in the Carling Cup, assuming United take care of business against Leeds on Tuesday. Why will Pogba not be sent out on loan? Take Sir Alex’s words for it.
“It’s more difficult to loan a boy of 18 who’s come from France.
“We prefer to keep him with us until we find he’s mature enough to possibly go on loan. Maybe next year that could be an option but we’re definitely expecting him this season to stay with Manchester United.”
