With the Champions League group stage well and truly underway, there’s been a lot of great football to watch already, but we’re only about halfway through and there’s a lot more to watch.
We’re sure you have a favourite team, but when they aren’t playing if you need any help choosing who to watch, this article will cover six of the most entertaining players to watch across the League, these superstars are sure to sway the Champions League odds in favour of their teams and are an absolute blast to watch on the field. Without any more mucking about, here’s the list.
Fabian Schär
This Swiss centre-back is currently playing for Newcastle United and was able to secure his first Champions League win with a final nail-in-the-coffin goal against Paris Saint-Germain on October 4th. The goal in question was an amazing long-range volley from well outside the box, with uncanny speed and unerring accuracy. He is currently one of the top goal-scorers in the Champions League, with two goals in two games. He is already known for his long-range accurate kicking skills as well as exemplary defensive work, clearly, Schär has put neither of those things aside coming into this Champions League series. Considering that Newcastle are on top of their current group, it’s likely that you’ll have plenty of opportunities to watch this Swiss powerhouse in action.
Rico Lewis
This is an interesting one, Lewis is one of the youngest players in the Champions League this season and after being instrumental, although goalless, in the win against RB Leipzig, Guardiola referred to him as one of the best players he’s ever coached. Considering that that list includes the likes of Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi, it’s pretty high praise. Lewis plays as a full-back or defensive midfielder and says that his favourite position is in the midfield, the further up the better. It’s a certainty that you’ll have lots of time to watch this young man, as he’s playing like fire and is only starting his career.
Rasmus Hojlund
Manchester United might be playing poorly and there’s certainly lots of questions to be asked there, but there’s no questioning the skill that Hojlund brings to the field. This skill was on display in their narrow loss to Galatasaray on the 4th of October, in which Hojlund managed to score twice, unfortunately for his side, answered quickly both times. The Danish player is young and seemingly at the start of a long and promising career, he seems wholly unaffected by the poor performance of the rest of his team and it could be a treat to watch him attempt to lift them and to see what he can pull out in the coming games that Manchester United have, where they are sure to try and prove themselves.
Adrien Thomasson
If scoring an important goal in a win against Arsenal isn’t enough, how about scoring an important goal in your side’s first Champions League game in 20 years? The 29-year-old French Midfielder settled Lens’ nerves and stopped the Arsenal push by intercepting and then scoring an equalising goal. Thomasson has only been with Lens since January but seemed happy enough to help the side to victory, describing his goal as the most symbolic of his career. The goal was scored after Thomasson shook off a malaise after letting in a Gabriel Jesus goal against Lens, Thomasson describes his side as resilient and that resilience seemingly paid off in spectacular fashion in their win against Arsenal.
Jude Bellingham
It’s probably no surprise to see Bellingham on this list. This star of a midfielder, playing for Real Madrid, likes to rack up assists and goals, doing both in the game against Napoli. Of course, Real Madrid should almost always be considered a serious competitor, having won the Champions League an impressive 14 times. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t a joy to watch, especially with exciting players like Bellingham on the field. Bellingham is starting to become known for late match-saving efforts and is a dangerous player to have opposite you on the field. Bellingham is also the first Real Madrid player to score in each of his opening four games since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. This is definitely an exciting player to watch.
Pedro Rodriguez
Speaking of late-game clinchers, Pedro Rodriguez slotted through a beautiful header to clinch the Lazio victory over Celtic. Despite an early lead by Celtic, 2 amazing headers from Lazio sealed their victory and Celtic’s defeat. This 36-year-old midfielder has an impressive 93% passing accuracy and if you enjoy watching players who are willing to throw their all into getting that crucial header or touch on the ball, Rodriguez will not disappoint.
