LONDON (AFP) – Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel has signed a two-year contract extension, the club announced on Wednesday.
The Slovakian international defender is now committed to the Premier League side until 2014.
The 25-year-old joined Liverpool from Russian side Zenit St-Petersburg in 2008 and has since played 82 games for the club.
“A club like Liverpool deserves to win trophies and I will help them do that,” Skrtel told the club website.
“Before I came here a lot of people thought I wasn’t good enough to play for Liverpool but I think I have shown I am.”
Skrtel missed the last three months of last season with a broken metatarsal but returned to represent Slovakia at the World Cup in South Africa, where they reached the last 16.
