Competition: Irish Premier Division
Market: Sligo Rovers win
Odds: 6/4 @ 888sport
Hoping to build off of their recent resurge and move away from the drop zone, Sligo Rovers will make the trip to a struggling Cork City on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Cork might have managed to scrape a 1-0 against lower league Longford Town in the FAI Cup earlier in the week, the Premier Division strugglers needed extra-time and a little luck. Last seen on top-flight duties playing out a sluggish 0-0 stalemate against a returning Waterford, Declan Carey’s men already find themselves sat at the foot of the table and seen as a real leading contender for the drop this season. Once again showing the same issues that haunted them for large spells of last year, Cork also have a real reputation for their rather glaring issues in front of goal. Once again drawing a blank when they made the trip to the Regional Sports Ground earlier in the month, Carey’s side have gone over 300 minutes without recording a strike and have remarkably scored just a single Premier Division goal in any of their opening seven appearances.
As for the visitors, while Cork might still find themselves in the midst of a Premier Division nightmare, Sligo will be desperate to build off of their recent purple patch. Knowing that three points on Friday could see them skyrocket away from the drop zone and open the weekend in the top half, Liam Buckley’s men once again impressed as they held onto a deserved 2-1 victory at home against a returning Shelbourne last week. Claiming back-to-back victories, including a 2-0 win when they made the trip to Derry City in their last appearances on the road, the Rovers should also be boosted by their most recent meeting against Friday’s hosts. When the two sides faced off last season, Sligo picked up a dramatic 4-2 win against Cork on their travels and will be looking to make a similar statement this week.
