Slovakia are a big step closer to next year’s World Cup in South Africa, following a convincing 7-0 win over San Marino.

The Slovakians only needed three minutes for Marek Cech to open the score, and Peter Pekarik made it 2-0 shortly after. Cech, Miroslav Stoch and Jan Kozak went on to give the hosts a 5-0 lead at half time.

Two more goals were added after the break, with Martin Jakubko and Lubo Hanzel adding to San Marino’s misery.

Slovakia lead Group 3 of the European World Cup qualifiers with 15 points from six games. Northern Ireland are second with 13 points but played a game more. Poland, Czech Republic and Slovenia appear to be in a fight for third place.
