West Ham United F.C. co-owner David Sullivan has confirmed the club have agreed a deal to sign Alex Song from Barcelona.
The deal is subject to Song, who joined Barcelona from Arsenal for a fee of £15 million in the summer of 2012, passing a medical at Upton Park.
The former Cameroon international, 27, tallied three assists in 28 English Premier League appearances while on loan at West Ham last season.
“We have a deal in place with Alex Song subject to a medical. If the medical is okay, we’ll take him,” Sullivan said.
“He’s a player we all admire and we just hope that the medical shows he’s in a sufficient state for us to gamble.
“He couldn’t physically pass a medical tomorrow, but if the medics say it’s just a technical thing and he’s only a couple of weeks away you’d take that gamble and hope they’re right.
“He’s still got two years left on his Barcelona contract and you’re signing a player on a three-year contract, so it’s a huge commitment. He’s a big earner, Alex.
“He’s injured at the moment, which is something you’ve got to weight up. But we’ve got until September 1 to make a decision.”
West Ham are priced at 9/4 to achieve a top-10 finish in the Premier League this season.
Thauvin joins Newcastle
Newcastle United F.C. have completed the signing of winger Florian Thauvin from Olympique de Marseille on a five-year deal.
The deal, believed to be worth around £13 million, sees midfielder Remy Cabella move to the Stade Vélodrome on loan until the end of the 2015/16 season, with an obligation to buy subject to certain criteria being met.
Thauvin, who will wear the No. 20 shirt at St James’ Park, becomes the Magpies’ fifth summer recruit following the arrivals of Aleksandar Mitrović, Chancel Mbemba, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ivan Toney.
“I am delighted to be a Newcastle United player,” Thauvin told the club’s official website.
“I have come from France to a really big club and am very happy to be here.
“It is a big honour to know that Newcastle have been after me for such a long time and that they wanted me that much.
“They have put their trust in me and I am looking forward to playing for the team.”
Manager Steve McClaren added: “Florian is a player the Club have been watching for a long time and I am delighted that we have been able to sign him.
“He is a perfect signing for this Club – someone who is young, with great potential and is one of the best young players in Europe.
“He is an exciting, creative talent who can score goals and make assists, and we believe he will have a very bright future at Newcastle.”
Thauvin, 22, bagged five goals and four assists in 36 Ligue 1 appearances for Marseille last term.
