The future of South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira will be decided on Monday, the national football association said.
A weekend report in a Brazilian newspaper quoted his wife saying the World Cup-winning coach would resign because he wanted to help her recover from major surgery and be with his family.
Parreira took over the national team of the 2010 World Cup hosts 15 months ago, charged with building a squad capable of at least reaching the knockout phase of the quadrennial tournament.
South Africa were slow to transform under Parreira, losing a number of friendlies and being eliminated in the first round of the 2008 African Nations Cup in Ghana without winning a match.
But the Brazilian was hailed after a 3-0 friendly triumph over Paraguay near Pretoria last month with the 1996 African champions giving their best performance for several years.
