Bournemouth further proved their European credentials with a 3-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

They took the lead early on as Dango Ouattara headed home from close range before Ryan Christie, who set up the opening goal with a sumptuous cross, made it 2-0 just two minutes later with a well-struck shot from outside the area.

Bournemouth had chances to add to their advantage after the break, with Aaron Ramsdale tipping over a ferocious shot from Antoine Semenyo and, from the resulting corner, clawing Christie’s header away from goal.

Ivan Juric’s men improved in the second half and clawed a goal back through Kamaldeen Sulemana after he fired home in the 72nd minute, brilliantly drilling a low effort across goal.

But Marcus Tavernier ended the contest 11 minutes later as the substitute bent a powerful effort past Ramsdale to seal the points.

Southampton remain at the bottom of the table, ten points adrift of safety, while the Cherries move up to fifth, just one point behind fourth-place Manchester City.

Data Debrief: Fine Cherries away form key to superb season

Bournemouth are looking good in their quest to secure European football for the first time in their history.

Their away form has been a key feature of their success this season, with their 22 points won on the road this campaign already the joint-most they have managed in any top-flight season.

Christie has performed brilliantly this season and, once again, produced a fine performance in the centre of midfield for the Cherries. On his 93rd appearance in the Premier League, the Scotland international scored and assisted in the same match for the first time.

In contrast, Southampton’s wretched season continues, with their historically bad home form seeing them lose 20 of their last 25 games in the competition, with only Sunderland in 2006 having a worse record over the same number of matches.
