Southampton have joined the race to sign Queens Park Rangers hotshot Charlie Austin, according to the Express.

Newcastle United had previously been installed as favourites to land the 25 year old, though the Saints have joined the battle to secure his services along with West Bromwich Albion.

In a lack-lustre campaign for QPR, the former Burnley man has been a consistent performer with seventeen Premier League strikes – a tally that is only bettered by Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Diego Costa of champions Chelsea.

Austin swapped Turf Moor for Loftus Road in the summer of 2013, and in total has thirty-seven goals for the club in sixty-eight outings in all competitions while he had had a scoring ratio of one in two for the Clarets.

His form this season has seen many call for him to be recognised internationally, though he is yet to represent his country at an level.
