Luciano Spalletti has explained why he decided to quit his job as Roma coach on Tuesday.

Spelletti was replaced by Claudio Ranieri on the Roma bench.

“I think my resignation was the right thing to do. It was my own initiative, that way I took my share of the responsibility,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

The Giallorossi have had a poor start to the season and reports have suggested that Spalletti was close to being fired.

He continued: “The last two results were certainly decisive, but in any case at the start of the season I had already met with President [Rosella] Sensi to clarify some matters and I’d realised I would have to take more responsibility on many fronts.”
