(GSM) – The Association of Spanish footballers (AFE) have called off a potential strike meaning league matches for this weekend will go ahead as scheduled.
The AFE last week announced plans to go on strike across all four divisions of the Liga Nacional Futbol Profesional (LNFP) from 16th April to 19th April.
The AFE were concerned about unpaid wages, particularly to players in the lower leagues, but promised to keep negotiating with the Spanish government’s sports council (CSD) and the Spanish football federation (RFEF), as well as the LNFP.
Lengthy talks have been held over the past couple of days and sufficient progress has been made to avert industrial action.
The potential stoppage would have affected a key weekend in all the leagues, with Barcelona’sgame against local rivals Espanyol among the most high-profile.
