New Wales boss Gary Speed may attempt to coax Ryan Giggs out of retirement, while Robbie Savage could also be recalled.
Giggs, 37, retired from international duty in 2007 to prolong his career with Manchester United.
He made his debut for Wales in 1991 and went on to gain 64 caps.
The veteran received criticism from some quarters for a perceived unwillingness to make himself available for his country.
Nevertheless, Speed – who was appointed Wales manager on Tuesday after leaving Sheffield United – is not discounting the possibility of a Giggs comeback to the national fold.
Derby County captain Savage has not featured for Wales after falling out with former manager John Toshack.
The ex-Leicester, Birmingham and Blackburn midfielder made his last appearance in 2005, but the 36-year-old has already been in touch with Speed about the possibility of a recall.
“In terms of retired players, we will be discussing it and I’m sure I will be ringing around a few players in the next few weeks,” Speed said.
“There are a couple who have already rung me to be honest. Sav (Savage) rang me.”
“I’m not sure about Ryan yet, but who wouldn’t want him in a team? I’m sure others will be in touch.”
Speed also revealed that he is planning talks with Craig Bellamy to determine if the Manchester City forward – on loan with Championship club Cardiff – is to continue as captain.
“I’ll be sitting down with Craig in the next few days and having a chat with him,” he said.
“I’ve got to speak to Craig. I spoke to him quite often anyway; I obviously played with him for Wales and Newcastle.”
“I know Craig as an individual, he’s his own man. He’s certainly got his own pathway mapped out in life and does what he feels is best for himself, and rightly so.”
