But they notched a morale-boosting victory in front of over 43,000 fans at Ibrox thanks to three goals in the first 20 minutes.
Stephen Whittaker opened the scoring after six minutes and Nigerian Sone Aluko added a quick-fire double shortly after.
Jamie Ness made it 4-0 12 minutes after the break before American substitute Alejandro Bedoya wrapped up the win with his late effort.
Paul McGowan and Steven Thompson both netted in the first half as St. Mirren won 2-0 at Kilmarnock while Hibernian won 2-1 at Aberdeen.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle played out a goalless draw against Dunfermline Athletic in Wednesday’s other match.
