Sporting Lisbon are considering the prospect of re-signing Eric Dier as a free agent when his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expires at the end of the season, according to The Times. They could even make a move for his services for a significantly reduced fee in January.
Next summer would mark exactly 10 years since Dier joined Spurs from Sporting for €5 million. In that time, he’s so far made a total of 360 appearances for the North Londoners, scoring 13 goals and contributing 12 assists. He started out as a defensive midfielder, but he has mostly played as a centre-back in the last few seasons.
With 49 England caps to his name, the 29-year-old has lost his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad, mostly due to the fact that he has no place in the plans of Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou either.
All things considered, it makes perfect sense for Dier to leave North London as soon as possible. Towards the end of this summer’s window, he was linked with the likes of AS Roma and Celtic, but at the moment, a return to Portugal seems far more likely.
