With a golden chance to lay down another marker and extend on what has been a glittering start to the new campaign, Sporting KC will welcome Houston to Children’s Mercy Park in the early hours of Wednesday.
Starting with the hosts, after spending the majority of last season battling it out at the foot of the Western Conference, few would have expected what has been a stunning start this time around for Sporting KC. While they may have come crashing out of the MLS is Back tournament in the quarter-finals earlier in the month, Peter Vermes’ men have won five of their opening six regular-season appearances and have skyrocketed to the top of the table. Enjoying what has been by far their brightest spell in recent memory, Kansas are in the midst of a real resurge and they should be boosted by what was another eye-catching display last week. Picking up a deserved 2-1 win away at Minnesota and no side in either conference holding a better attacking tally so far, the midweek hosts should be looking to make another statement.
As for the visitors, while the mood around Children’s Mercy Park is at a real red-hot high, the same cannot be said for a Houston outfit who have struggled to find their form either side of the enforced break. Playing out what was a lacklustre 0-0 stalemate at home against FC Dallas last week, La Naranja are yet to land a single MLS victory this season and many have them tipped as the leading contender to lift the wooden spoon in the Western Conference this year. Remarkably without a win on their travels since opening up 2020, Houston also hold what is a dreadful record against Wednesday’s hosts. Hit with a 4-0 drumming when they last faced off Sporting KC back in March, the Dynamo’s have lost each of their three straight contests against the league leaders.
