Sporting Lisbon have rejected an offer from Southampton for full-back Marcos Rojo, according to the Express.
The 24 year old was one of the stand out performers for Argentina on their route to the final at this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil, leading him to be linked with a number of Premier League clubs.
Southampton, who have lost a number of their key players in the close season, were hoping to steal a march on their rivals by tabling a bid but their offer has been deemed unsuitable by the Portuguese club.
Rojo can play both at left back and in the centre of defence, so would go some way to filling the void left by Luke Shaw and Dejan Lovren should a deal materialise.
They have already brought in full-back Ryan Bertrand on loan from Chelsea while they have also agreed deals for forward Graziano Pelle and winger Dusan Tadic.
