Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Ashley Phillips from Blackburn Rovers, according to Simon Collins of the Evening Standard.
The 18-year-old centre-back, obviously seen as a great prospect, is scheduled to undergo a medical with Spurs in the next 24 hours, after the clubs agreed on a transfer fee of £3 million for his services. Once that’s done, there will be no obstacles to the transfer going through and providing all goes well, he’ll travel to join his new teammates on their pre-season tour in Asia.
While Phillips is obviously an addition for the future of their squad, Spurs continue their pursuit of a centre-back that would be more ready-made, capable of making a contribution to Ange Postecoglou’s team straight away. Their primary targets in that aspect remain Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven of Wolfsburg, as reported before.
As for Phillips, he was reportedly of interest to Manchester United and Chelsea as well, but Spurs acted on the interest first.
