Spurs edge West Brom closer to the drop

Jermaine Jenas’s 25-yard goal was good enough to give Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win over Premier League basement club West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane here on Saturday.

Jenas’s strike two minutes before half-time condemned the visitors to a defeat that left them six points shy of safety with just three games left to retain their Premier League status.

The Baggies did have chances with Marc-Antoine Fortune volleying over from 10 yards and later seeing a deflected shot hit the post.

Shelton Martis headed wide from five yards and another header was cleared off the line by Jermain Defoe.

However, West Brom manager Tony Mowbray insisted all was not yet lost for his side.

“It was a bit of deja vu – we had enough opportunities to get back on level terms but we ended up frustrated.

“Their keeper (Heurelho Gomes) made some good saves and we had a shot that hit the post – all season it’s been fine margins like that.

“Nine points (out of the last three games) will give us 37 – it’s a huge ask, but we’re more than capable of doing it, starting against Wigan next week,” Mowbray insisted.
