Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was due to have wrist and pelvic surgery on Friday after being involved in a motorbike crash.
The 36-year-old Italian hit a car on Thursday while driving through Walthamstow, east London, fracturing both his wrists and damaging his pelvis.
Ambulance staff described the injuries as “life-changing” and the former Chelsea star is under the care of specialists at a private hospital.
Tottenham’s head of medical services Wayne Diesel told the official club website: “We have leading specialists looking after Carlo and once surgery is complete and his recovery is under way, we will have a clearer idea of how many weeks he will be out for.”
Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, added: “We are all sorry to hear about what has happened to Carlo. We are just relieved that the injuries that he sustained in the accident weren’t more serious.
“Everyone at the club sends their best wishes and we hope that he recovers soon.”
Cudicini arrived at White Hart Lane last January on a free transfer following a decade at Chelsea and has made eight appearances this season as understudy to first-choice keeper Heurelho Gomes.
