Spurs not likely to sack Mourinho

There has been no indication that Tottenham Hotspur are considering ending the employment of head coach Jose Mourinho early, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Mourinho arrived to North London halfway through the 2019-20 season, replacing Mauricio Pochettino after what was seen as a hugely underwhelming start to the campaign. The Portuguese led the team to a sixth-place finish, three points clear of neighbours Arsenal and edging out Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference for a place in the Europa League. They’ve made it through the group stage of the competition this term and are set to face Austrian side Wolfsberg in the round of 32 in a few days.

But back in the Premier League, the defeat to Manchester City on Saturday was the fourth in the last five outings for Spurs. Prior to that stint, it took them 28 league games played to lose four, and this notably poor run of form has led to questions being asked about Mourinho potentially losing his job.

However, Ornstein reveals that there is no breakout clause in the contract Mourinho signed with the club, which runs until the summer of 2023. That means that the former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss would be entitled to a huge payout if the club decided to sack him, which in turn indicates that both the club and the coach see the current arrangement as a long-standing one. And as of yet, there is nothing to suggest a change of heart from either side.
