Tottenham Hotspur sealed deals for Hugo Lloris and Clint Dempsey on Friday, but failed in their attempts to sign Joao Moutinho from Porto.
Portugal international Moutinho was widely believed to be the number one target of Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas, who coached Moutinho during his treble-winning season at Porto in 2010/11.
Tottenham and Porto reportedly agreed a fee of 22 million pounds for midfielder, but could not conclude talks over personal terms prior to the transfer window shutting.
Villas-Boas had hoped Moutinho would directly replace playmaker Luka Modric following the sale of the Croatian to Real Madrid.
Spurs, who also offloaded Rafael van der Vaart to Hamburg, did manage to bring in powerful midfielder Moussa Dembele from Fulham on Wednesday.
And Dembele has now been joined in making the move from Craven Cottage to north London by fellow midfielder Dempsey.
The USA international had been on strike at Fulham after demanding a transfer in the off-season.
Dempsey had been expected to join Liverpool, but a deal did not materialise, leaving the want-away player in limbo.
He is believed have rejected a move to Aston Villa on Thursday, before a last-minute switch to Tottenham, worth approximately six million pounds, was agreed prior to the transfer window closing on Friday.
Spurs also succeeded in their long pursuit of Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who arrives at White Hart Lane on a four-year deal after the clubs agreed a fee of up to 12 million pounds.
“I’m here because I believe in Tottenham,” the 25-year-old France international said in a statement on the Spurs website.
“I think everything is ok for the future of Tottenham, we have great players in the team and a great coach and everything is alright and in place to get to the Champions League next year.”
Lloris is expected to be first choice in goal for Spurs, ahead of veteran American Brad Friedel.
