Spurs want top spot

Topping Group A appears Tottenham’s priority ahead of the English club’s final group stage match against FC Twente on Tuesday.

Spurs top the group on goal difference from Serie A giants and reigning champions Inter Milan, who travel to German outfit Werder Bremen.

Tottenham’s trip to Twente will be no easier, but Spurs manager Harry Redknapp knows what a win in Holland could mean for his side in the competition’s knockout stages.

“It’s (avoiding teams like) Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Barcelona otherwise” he told the BBC. “You want to finish top and avoid them.”

“You would certainly have a better chance of getting someone (less difficult) and progressing.”

“Inter will want to win; Twente will want to beat us, for sure, and we want to finish top if we can, so there is a lot to play for.”

“Inter Milan will go to Germany looking to win because that top position is important.”

Redknapp’s sentiments were echoed by midfielder Luka Modric, who did not let reports he was being affected by illness stop him talking up his side’s goals.

“We just need to carry on, to try and beat Twente because if you finish first in the group, you can have a better draw,” Modric told the club’s official website.

“We know it’s not easy, but it’s important to try to finish first.”

“It’s been a great experience for us, the first time in the Champions League for a lot of players.”

“We are playing great football and everyone likes to watch us because we play to score more goals than our opponents and everyone enjoys that.”

“We just go onto the pitch with confidence, big belief and I think that’s one of the reasons why we’re doing so well at the moment.”
