As claimed by both Sky Sports and The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur have won the race to sign Gedson Fernandes from Benfica.
The Portuguese club had accepted bids from both Spurs and West Ham, and even though the Hammers appeared to have landed the midfielder, a late bid from Spurs saw theirs off as the player himself made the decision. Chelsea were also reportedly involved in the race.
Jose Mourinho will be without the services of Moussa Sissoko for several months. The France international underwent knee surgery, leaving the manager short of options in the middle of the park, and that, many believe, prompted last season’s Champions League finalists to step into the fray for Fernandes.
The young Portuguese, who turned 21 only last week, made 13 appearances for Benfica in all competitions this season, and that appears to have been enough to attract interest from the Premier League.Providing there are no hitches in the coming days, he will join Spurs on an 18-month loan.
