Standard de Liege have won the Belgian league for the tenth time in history, beating RSC Anderlecht 2-1 on aggregate in a final play-off.
As the two sides finished level on points in the regular season and as Belgium doesn’t decide its championships based on goal record, Standard and Anderlecht featured in two additional games to decide which team was to take home the trophy.
The first leg, played in Brussels on Thursday, ended in a 1-1 draw. In the second, a converted penalty from Axel Witzel in the 39th minute was enough to earn Standard the final victory.
Standard, for whom this is their second consecutive championships, will also get to make an appearance in the group stage of the Champions League.
