Ajax have taken a big step toward qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Champions League by beating Dinamo Zagreb, coach Frank de Boer.
Second half goals from Derk Boerrigter and Christian Eriksen helped the Eredivisie champions to a 2-0 lead in Zagreb on Tuesday, and De Boer feels the Amsterdam giants are on the right path.
“We have taken a big step in the right direction, although obviously we also want to be in the Champions League after winter,” De Boer told uefa.com.
“I am very happy as we dominated most of the time. They started pretty well and had two good chances to score at the beginning.”
“After that we got a grip on the game and at certain points we had 66 per cent of possession. We also created some chances in the first half but failed to take them. It was also important to not concede a goal.”
Ajax sit second in Group D with four points from three games, while Dinamo Zagreb are bottom, with zero points.
Real Madrid top the section with a 100 per cent record, while Lyon are third.
