Stevens doubts Netherlands prospects

Huub Stevens says he has doubts over Netherlands’ chances of reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2012.

The Dutch need to secure a victory in Wednesday’s match against Germany to stay in the hunt to progress from the Group of Death after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Denmark in their first match of the tournament.

However, it is reported that the team’s preparations for the crucial encounter have been disrupted by a revolt led by vice-captain Rafael van der Vaart, who started Saturday’s contest on the bench.

Schalke coach Stevens offered his full support to Netherlands boss Bert van Marwijk, but he is not convinced the team will be able to secure a top-two finish in Group B.

“I admire Van Marwijk a lot,” Stevens told Bild. “Almost 17 million people live in Netherlands, and they all support the national team coach.

“A trainer must remain faithful to his system – we cannot forget that they were runners-up (at the 2010 World Cup) with the same system. But I think he should do some things differently.

“I do not believe that Netherlands will progress. If we lose to Germany, we will definitely be out already.”

It is believed Van Marwijk will hand Klaas-Jan Huntelaar a start against Germany after Robin van Persie came under criticism following his disappointing performance against Denmark, and Stevens is in favour of the change.

“In my opinion, you should start with people who are in good form,” he continued.

“I have always said to play with Van Persie in the centre with Huntelaar at the top. You have the top scorer in England and the top scorer in Germany – you should use them.”
