Stoke 20/21 to beat Barnsley in Wednesday’s Championship showdown

Competition: Championship

Market: Stoke City win

Odds: 20/21 @ 888sport

Smelling the chance to potentially break into the automatic spots in midweek, Stoke will welcome Barnsley to the Bet365 Stadium on Wednesday night.

Starting with the hosts, while Stoke would have been disappointed to have entered the international break with a 3-0 drumming against Fulham on the road, the Potters bounced back over the weekend. Making their return with a deserved 2-1 victory against Huddersfield Town on home soil, Michael O’Neill’s side have their sights firmly set on landing a play-off spot this time around. Making a host of improvements since bringing in the former Northern Ireland boss, Wednesday’s hosts have impressed many across the Championship this season. Also managing to extend on their League Cup run with a 2-0 win against League One outfit Doncaster last month, Stoke have won four of their last five matchups across all formats. With the mood in their camp likely to be at a real high, it should also be noted that the Potters have won all five of their competitive home fixtures since opening the 2021/22 campaign.

As for the visitors, while Barnsley might have shocked many across the Championship last season as they landed a play-off finish, the Reds have failed to keep up that momentum this time around. Making the call to bring in new boss Markus Schopp over the summer, fans around Oakwell saw their side put in what would have been another worrying display over the weekend. Blown away on the road and hit with a deserved 3-0 drumming at the hands of Bournemouth, the Tykes are now in the midst of a four-match winless run. With it appearing that their 1-0 win against Coventry last month was just a minor boost, Barnsley could face another stern test on their travels on Wednesday night. Shipping five goals in back-to-back contests outside of South Yorkshire, we’re backing a home victory here.
