Sturridge seeking central role

Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge believes his best position is as a centre-forward, but says he is prepared to play wherever selected.

Sturridge has had a meteoric rise this season, receiving plaudits and being ear-marked as the man to replace the suspended Wayne Rooney for England at Euro 2012.

However, despite his good form, both Chelsea’s former boss Andre Villas-Boas and current interim manager Roberto Di Matteo have refused to play him down the middle and used him as an attacking outlet out wide.

Yet the England man believes the central striker role is his best position, telling The Sun on Sunday: “That’s the position I will always pick myself, centre-forward.

“But whatever position the manager picks me in I’m happy and right now, for the team, I’m in the wide position.

“I will always give 100 per cent and work as hard as I can to get the success we all want.”

Chelsea sit fifth in the Premier League, but still have the chance to gain some silverware in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Sturridge added: “At Chelsea we want to finish the season off as well as we can, we have some big games coming up and if we can finish the season with some silverware it would be fantastic.

“I am confident. I think it’s going to be very exciting.”
