Looking to put last weekends EFL Trophy heartbreak behind them, Sunderland will travel to the Wham Stadium on Wednesday.

Starting with the hosts, slumping to a 1-0 loss at home to Fleetwood over the weekend, Accrington Stanley are enduring arguably their worst run of the campaign at the back end of the season. Now suffering back to back defeats against Fleetwood and a 5-2 hammering away at Burton, John Coleman’s side hold just a two-point buffer from slipping into the drop zone. Also on a run of form that has seen them lost five of their last six League One appearances, Stanley have picked up just two League One victories since Boxing Day. With Coleman seeing his side also lose their last three matches at the Wham Stadium, Wednesday could prove to be another extremely tough test.

As for the visitors, while a penalty shootout may have seen Portsmouth leave Wembley with the EFL Trophy, the mood on Sunderland’s camp will still be on a high. Enjoying a 16-match unbeaten run in England’s third-tier and within touching distance of the automatic positions, one man to watch in midweek will be the inform Aiden McGeady. Bagging a brace in Sunday’s final, the former Everton man has impressed since Josh Maja’s move to France and has now bagged 11 goals this campaign. Also yet to lose any of their seven away matches in 2019, we’re backing a victory for the Black Cats on Wednesday night.
