Competition: EFL Trophy
Market: Sunderland win
Odds: 4/6 @ 888sport
Looking to make it two in two when they turn their attention back to EFL Trophy duties, Sunderland will welcome Carlisle to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Sunderland would have been left frustrated to have only left the Valley with a point to show for themselves over the weekend, the Black Cats did once again impress. Dominating large spells of proceedings and receiving real praise from Head Coach Phil Parkinson, the former Premier League outfit are unbeaten in League One this season and are seen as a leading contender to claw a route back to the Championship this time around. With a real reputation for their recent displays at the back after not allowing Charlton in a single shot on target in South London, the one-time Bolton boss also saw his men lay down the most empathic of markers when they opened up this year’s EFL Trophy campaign last month. Eventually putting eight past Aston Villa’s U21’s at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland will be confident of extending on their unbeaten run in midweek.
As for the visitors, just about managing to drag a 1-0 win over League Two debutants Barrow over the finish line on Saturday afternoon, Carlisle will be desperate to drag that momentum into EFL Trophy action in midweek. However, crashing out of the League Cup thanks to what turned out to be a thumping 3-0 defeat at the hands of Oldham last month, the Cumbrians have gained a real reputation for their issues on the road. Last seen away from Brunton Park getting hit with a 1-0 loss against Scunthorpe on their travels a fortnight ago, Carlisle have lost all three of their away fixtures entering October and also saw Fleetwood breeze past them when they open up this year’s EFL Trophy. Eventually leaving Lancashire on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat, it should also be noted that the Blues were hit with another 3-1 defeat when they faced off against the Black Cats back in 2018.
