Sunderland boss Bruce reveals James interest

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has revealed he is interested in signing England goalkeeper David James from Portsmouth.

Bruce is looking for a keeper as cover for Scotland international Craig Gordon, who is likely to be sidelined for three months with a broken arm.

Gordon suffered the injury in training recently, leaving Bruce with few options as senior reserve stopper Marlon Fulop wants to leave the Stadium of Light.

James, who played three of England’s four games at the World Cup, is believed to be keen to leave Portsmouth after their relegation to to the Championship and Bruce is considering a bid to sign him on a short-term deal.

“He’s still England’s number one goalkeeper. He’d be a good short-term signing for us,” Bruce told the Daily Mirror.

“But what we have to decide now is to whether make a signing or whether the two young keepers that we have are ready for the Premier League.

“The Premier League is a very tough place and we’ll have to take some time to think about whether they’re ready for that.”
