Sunderland eyeing Welbeck return

Sunderland are lining up a move for Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck, according to the Daily Star.

The North East club had hoped to secure a permanent deal for Fabio Borini of Liverpool, after the Italian impressed on loan with them last season but the move has failed to materialise.

Welbeck, who missed United’s shock opening day defeat to Swansea City at the weekend with a knee injury, made thirty-five appearances in all competitions last season, scoring ten goals while he was part of England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

He spent the entire 2010/11 campaign on loan with Sunderland, scoring six goals in twenty-eight outings before returning to Old Trafford while he has also had a brief spell at Preston North End.

Sunderland drew with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon, and host United in their first home game of the campaign on Sunday afternoon.
