Sunday People is reporting that Sunderland are stepping up their efforts to sign Lazio forward Mauro Zarate.
Martin O’Neill is eager to sign another forward to help Steven Fletcher and Stephane Sessegnon, but it appears the Black Cats are set to miss out on Swansea striker Danny Graham.
After being informed the Swans will not sell Graham before they sign a replacement, the Black Cats have turned their attention to Lazio’s Mauro Zarate.
Zarate, 25, is currently on the fringes at Stadio Olimpico and is hoping to leave the club in search of first team football.
Sunderland are prepared to take the player on loan until the end of the season, while they could also insert a buy-out clause.
The Argentine also has offers from Dynamo Kiev and Besiktas, but he prefers a switch to English Premier League.
Since his loan deal at Inter ended in June 2012, Zarate has made just one Serie A appearance for Lazio.
