Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has vowed to attack Manchester United when he takes his side to Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
Sunderland are looking an outside bet for Europe and thrashed Chelsea 3-0 recently – and Bruce wants more of the same.
“It’s vitally important that you go there and give it a go – that we take them on as a team and get in among them,” said the former Manchester United captain.
“You have to relish the occasion and want to make a game of it, to show what you can do on the biggest stage.”
“I’ve experienced it from the other side – as a Manchester United player – that sometimes opponents are beaten while they’re still in the tunnel at Old Trafford and I don’t want that to happen to us.”
“We have to believe in ourselves.”
Sunderland have not won at Old Trafford since the 1960s, when Matt Busby was still manager of the Red Devils and Bruce has fared little better.
“I think I’ve failed to beat Sir Alex in 16 attempts,” he said. “So I know what I’m up against but I always travel in hope.”
“I know how bad the stats look for me and Sunderland but we are talking about Manchester United here.”
“They are an incredible club and they live by incredible standards.”
Danny Welbeck will not be eligible to play against his parent club while Lee Cattermole is suspended for Bruce’s men.
