Surely Arsenal shouldn’t be bringing back Jens Lehmann?

According to some reports this morning Arsenal are trying to convince former-keeper Jens Lehmann to return to the club on a short-term basis.

The 41 year-old retired last summer after a stint in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart.

Unbelievable

When I read this I couldn’t believe my eyes. The former-Germany keeper was past his best when he left Arsenal in 2008 so to bring him back in his forties is just ridiculous.

He is definitely set to spend the next six weeks with the Gunners working towards some of his coaching badges though.

“I am in London and so far have heard nothing of such plans, but you never know,” the veteran keeper told Bild am Sonntag. However Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to utilise the keeper while he is available.

Clown

Although he was always a decent keeper he always struck me as a clown. He would make poor mistakes and a lot of the time in his latter days at Arsenal they were punished for his poor mistakes. Every keeper makes mistakes but his seemed to be crazy ones.

Crazy

Apparently in Germany all keepers are considered, well I actually think it’s a worldwide phenomenon. However Jens Lehmann is crazier than a box of frogs. He just seemed to have a self destruct button which left his own teammates and fans with their heads in their hands. He was considered by a lot of Gunners fans as a liability.

Backup

Arsenal currently have three goalkeepers on the sidelines injured. Polish duo Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski and Italian youngster Vito Mannone all out injured. That means that Spaniard Manuel Almunia is the only available senior goalkeeper available to Arsene Wenger.

For Arsenal’s sake I just hope Wenger is only considering using him as cover for Almunia and not competition. I am not Almunia’s biggest fans but surely he is better than a player who would have to come out of retirement to play again.

Backwards

Signing Jens Lehmann would be a backwards move by Arsenal and their boss Arsene Wenger. Lehmann spent five years at Arsenal and he helped the club to honours but that is all in the past.  Arsenal need to move forward and not back.

Youth

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a big fan of nurturing young talent and helping them develop. Yet it seems he is still re-signing a player old enough to be Wojciech Szczesny’s dad. One of Wenger’s problem positions in recent years has been between the sticks and this really isn’t the solution.

Rubbish

If I hadn’t read it from such a reliable source as Sky Sports news then I would have dismissed the story as rubbish and laughed to myself.

Unfortunately for Gunners fans I think there is truth in the story and I doubt that they’ll be laughing if he does re-join the club and make a mistake that could cost them the Premier League title.

Although as I mentioned earlier he will probably only be backup and be at the club till the end of the season. I think the majority of Arsenal fans will be breathing a big sigh of relief knowing those two facts.

Will Jens Lehmann re-join Arsenal?

As for Arsene Wenger the earlier he left the club the better it would be for the Gunners. Why Lehmann? A W has no ideas

I am an Arsenal-Till-I-Die. I will never-ever welcome Jens back to the club as a goalkeeper again. Arsene Wenger should please, for the sake of God not re-sign Lehmann, let him have a second thought about it and look elsewhere for another keeper!
